Earthquake Insurance

EARTHQUAKE INSURANCENortheast Seismicity from Oct. 1975 – March 2010. Source: Weston Observatory

Living in New England, we generally don’t think that we are exposed to the risk of earthquakes—particularly in comparison to our fellow Americans on the West Coast. But major earthquakes have occurred in the region and seismologists at the Weston Observatory say it’s not a matter of “if” but “when” the next will occur.   Case in point: the August 2011 5.8 earthquake originating in Virginia that was felt from North Carolina to Toronto, Canada.  And according to the U.S. Geological Survey, 39 states, including every New England state, have experienced temblors in the last century. (See the graphic on this page.)

Our intent is not to be alarmist. Certainly, earthquakes don’t occur with the frequency or severity experienced in California or Japan.  But even a moderate quake can cause damage to your home.  So it’s important to understand that your homeowner insurance does not cover damage to your home or personal property from earthquakes.

To learn more about earthquake insurance protection, contact the insurance professionals at the Cushman Insurance Group.  We’ll be happy to provide you with a no obligation quote.
